Word of the Day - 2/24/2009

Fatidic

Fatidic means prophetic.

Jeremiah and Hananiah engaged in a fatidic duel. Hananiah predicted that the Babylonian captivity would last only two years while Jeremiah assured that Israel would endure 70 years of bondage.

"Within two years I am going to bring back to this place all the vessels of the LORD'S house, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took away from this place and carried to Babylon. (Jeremiah 28:3, NASB)

Jeremiah proved accurate and Hananiah died within a year of his false prophecy. (Jeremiah 28:17)

Note: This woodcut of Hananiah and Jeremiah was created by Johann Christoph Weigel (1654-1726).
