Bible Trivia - 8/18/2008

Question: What was Jesus’ answer when his disciples asked why a man had been born blind?

Answer: So that God’s work could be shown in His life. (John 9:3)

Comments: In their travels, Jesus and his disciples encountered a man born blind. His disciples asked their teacher whose sin accounted for the man's condition, reflecting the theology of the day. In congenital cases such as this, some rabbis argued that the cause was pre-natal sin by the fetus while others posed that the condition was a result of was the mother's sin while pregnant. (D. A. Carson, The Gospel According to John (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans Publishing Co., 1991), p. 362.) Jesus refuted this interpretation with his response.

Jesus answered, "It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him." (John 19:3, NASB)

Jesus not only absolved the man from blame but later healed him as well. (John 19:7)
