In Eckleburg's Eyes - 11/17/2008, Part 4

After the volleyball game, a starving JTH and I ate at the Great American Steak and Buffet Company. We enjoyed the meal and got to see this man, who looked and sounded eerily like Terry Funk. He may not have been Terry Funk, but I suspect he knew who Terry Funk was. In my estimation, there are two kinds of people in this world: those who know who Terry Funk is and those who should.

Afterwards, JTH and I ran errands at Wal-Mart (on Clinton Highway), K Mart, Wal-Mart (on Walker Springs), Food City, and Butler and Bailey. This is the second week in a row we have gone to Butler and Bailey, more than in the last several years combined. On this night we were looking for both the elusive Mallomars (for me) and Chewy Gobstoppers (for JTH). As usual, we came up empty. We have an uncanny talent for selecting impossible items to shop for.

The trips were not for naught. At the first Wal-Mart I found much needed new laces for my tennis shoes. I got them with pro oval metal tips. When I shop for tennis shoe accessories, I do not want amateur material.

At K-Mart, we learned that the location is closing on January 18th along with the Eyeglass World, Taco Bell, and Texas Roadhouse in the same shopping center. At present, all items in the store are 10% off. The K-Mart cashier who checked us out admitted, “We all want to find him (the landowner) and do bodily harm.” Her honesty amused us and frightened us simultaneously. I wonder what Eyeglass World will do with their massive display glasses...

At Food City, I played this grabbie machine which was part of S & Amusements out of Johnson City. Does that disturb anyone else?

After our largely futile shopping mission, we met ALK at my house. She was sore after walking in the Buddy’s Race Against Cancer earlier in the day. Her naturally bad knees were sorer than usual. She is sucha trooper.

At JTH’s request, we watched Jeff Dunham’s Very Special Christmas while ALK supervised JTH baking cooking for the grieving family of JMT. I picked out the cookies and would not let JTH cook them without ALK’s assistance. In her family, after a notorious over salting incident, ALK is not allowed to bake unsupervised, but in the presence of us, she is the expert. As you can tell from this photo, JTH loves the ventriloquist. ALK and I love watching him watch Jeff Dunham.

We delivered the cookies to JMT’s home very late. In fact, we woke up her husband’s mother by calling the wrong number and then woke up her husband at the house. They typically stay up late. I also continually stuck my foot in my mouth, including telling several embarrassing stories starring ALK. If my body is found decomposing somewhere, Bart may very well be responsible.

We also got to catch up with JMT’s daughter MT. She had just gotten off a shift working at Moe’s Southwest grill. I loved the irony as her name is “Mo”. I was amazed that she was working while playing basketball for Bearden High School. Evidently, she works only one four-hour shift per week. I was still impressed. JTH and I are tentatively planning to attend her game Monday against Powell.

As usual, we kept the family up and left after midnight.
