Bible Trivia - 8/21/2008

Question: Name the sister-in-law of Ruth.

Answer: Orpah. (Ruth 1:4-14)

Comments: In the book of Ruth, Naomi has two daughters-in-law, Ruth and Orpah. Both were from Moab. When all of the men in the family died, Ruth stayed with Naomi while Orpah returned to her family in Moab.

They took for themselves Moabite women as wives; the name of the one was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth. And they lived there about ten years. (Ruth 1:4, NASB)

Oprah Winfrey was actually named for Orpah. Her aunt Ida selected the name from the Bible. This is the anme that appeared on her birth certificate but due to a lack of education in the area of Mississippi to which she was born, the letters in the name "Orpah" were often transposed. Thus, she came to be known as "Oprah".
