On Sunday morning, WAM attended Sunday School. I interpersed the history of our church with the conclusion of Jesus' High Priestly Prayer (John 17:20-26). In the course of discussion I noted what a bold stance it was that our church unanimously passed a resolution on July 3, 1963, to allow people of all races to attend the church and be seated wherever available. This was one year before the Civil Rights Act. WAM countered:
“It’s not that bold when you know no one’s gonna show up.”
I corrected him noting that this would still make waves in the community. His commentary is correct, however. It is sad that 45 years after this resoultion was made, the church is still functionally segregated. Our church is sadly the rule and not the exception as well.
