Word of the Day - 1/19/2009

Salver

A salver is a tray, especially one used for serving food or beverages.

Presented with the option of anything she wished, up to half of the kingdom, Herodias' daughter requested John the Baptist's head on a salver. (Matthew 14:8; Mark 6:25) Her request was granted and the prophet was martyred.

Immediately she came in a hurry to the king and asked, saying, "I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter." (Mark 6:25, NASB)

Note: This troublesome image of Salome with her prize (titled "Salome with the Head of John the Baptist") was painted by the Italian master Caravaggio (1571-1610). It hangs in the National Gallery, London.
