Word of the Day - 10/27/2008

Cognate

A cognate means related by birth; of the same parentage, descent, etc. In linguistics, cognate means descended from the same language or form, e.g. cognate languages such as French and Spanish.

In the book's opening chapter, Matthew's genealogy makes it clear that Jesus was cognate to David. This is noted in the opening verse of the book and the connection is accentuated by the account being divided into three 14-part increments. The letters of David's name have a numeric value of fourteen. David's is also the only name listed twice in the list as he was present at the end of the first historic division and the beginning of the second.

The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham: (Matthew 1:1, NASB)

Matthew wants his Jewish audience to know that Jesus was a legitimate heir.
