Question: Jesus said that the money changers had turned the temple from a house of prayer into what?
Answer: A den of thieves (Matthew 21:13), or a house of merchandise (John 2:16)
Comments: Jesus accused those who bought and sold in the temple of transforming what should have been a "house of prayer" into a "robber's den", effectively defeating the purpose of the temple. Jesus' terminology drew from the Old Testament prophetic tradition. "House of prayer" orignates with Isaiah 56:7 and "robbers' den" comes from Jeremiah 7:11.
And He said to them, "It is written, 'MY HOUSE SHALL BE CALLED A HOUSE OF PRAYER'; but you are making it a ROBBERS' DEN." (Matthew 21:13, NASB)
While making this proclamation, Jesus was evacuating the area.
