Question: As recorded in the book of Acts, how many disciples did the apostles choose to look after the food distribution to widows?
Answer: 7. (Acts 6:1-7)
Comments: As the early church grew, a problem arose when food was not being distributed properly to widows. The twelve disciples decided to appoint seven men to perform this task so that they would not neglect their preaching duties.
"Therefore, brethren, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task." (Acts 6:3, NASB)
It is generally believed that the office of deacon originated in the selection of these seven men. The original seven deacons were Stephen, Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas and Nicolas. (Acts 6:5)
