Prayer Blog - 4/22/2008

Having heard rumors of HBT having an illness for about a week, I finally got ahold of the elusive professor on Monday night.

HBT has been diagnosed with polycythemia, a condition in which there is a net increase in the total number of blood cells in the body. Though he is being treated with chemotherapy, this is actually better than the alternative.

His count was high at a routine January check up and his doctor (Rose) had him return at intervals of two and three weeks. Knowing him, his doctor knew that his ailment was not stress related and ordered a bone marrow aspiration. The two alternatives were polycythemia and chronic myelogenous leukemia. Needless to say, he was thrilled when he discovered he had polycythemia.

He began taking chemotherapy in pill form on April 5. When he began, his count was at 563. After ten days of treatment it was already down to 505. Yesterday (4/21), he had it checked again and again the number had decreased to 488. These numbers are clearly heading in the right direction.

Please pray for the continued improvement in his condition.

I ate with HBT today and his chemotherapy seems to be working. His counts are now in the 360s and though they weary him, he is in great spirits as usual.
