Question: What did Jesus do twice while reprimanding those about to stone a woman for adultery?
Answer: Write in the dirt. (John 8:1-11)
Comments: Jesus' inscription in the dirt while defending the woman caught in adultery is the only time the Biblical text documents him writing. There has been much speculation as to what he wrote. One scholar suggested, "Where's the man?" since adultery by defintion involves two parties.
The fact that he wrote is far more significant than what he wrote. The writing served to create a diversion for the presumably scantily clad and embarrassed woman. It is yet another example of Jesus' compassion.
