Bible Trivia - 4/1/2008

Question: Who fell asleep during Paul’s preaching and fell to his death out of a window, but was later revived by Paul?

Answer: Eutychus. (Acts 20:9-12)

Comments: Many scholars have made comparisons between the story of Eutchus (Acts 20:7-12) and Elijah’s raising of a widow’s son (I Kings 17:17-24). In each case, a holy man revives a dead boy by lying upon him. Both stories feature an upper room. (The LXX of I Kings 17:17 and Acts both use huperoon). Both pericopes comment on the status of the victim’s spirit of soul (psuche). In comparing these marratives, the scholars are asserting that Paul has the same divine power as his spiritual predecessors (Elijah, Elisha, Jesus and Peter).
