Word of the Day - 3/3/2008

Alopecia

Alopecia is the loss of hair, baldness.

One of the most notorious cases of alopecia is that of Elisha the prophet. While en route to Bethel, some youths taunted his baldness. He turned, pronounced a curse upon them, and soon two female bears mauled forty-two of the youths. (II Kings 2:23-24).

Needless to day, this passage has drawn lost of criticism for both Elisha and God. Most view this as a cautionary tale to not harm God’s anointed. (Psalm 105:15)

Noted apologist Norman L. Geisler (b. 1932) defends by attacking the youths - "As best we can tell, this was a violent mob of dangerous teenagers, comparable to a modern street gang."

What do you think?
